"but the fault of a system..." You acknowledge the source, so why did you not (try to) change the system? Obviously, the leader of the Free World has a system at heart that is not free for everyone. The root of the problem is the system. Every hippie knew that it was the system. And none changed the system, and even today they turn away when others point to the very clear system that is the cause: Winner-take-all.
The USA is the strongest nation on the planet, but the world is still a mess. What is going on? It is the system: folks are not following the US Constitution. We are not leading the world well and we can blame the system.
The Framers put the following in place, system-wise:
Federal Level: Concentration of Powers, so the nation would be strong, and yes it is.
State Levels: XXXX (because the US Constitution created a gray area and declares contradicting aspects about how to vote for State officials).
Local Levels: We The People galore. Look at the Ninth, Tenth, and Fourteenth Amendments, and the local level is where the American People are truly free.
Except for the system! Because this is not what we ended up getting. This is what we have in place:
Federal level: Concentration of Powers
State levels: Concentration of Powers
Local levels: Concentration of Powers
At first opportunity, the State powers that be started making themselves as powerful as they could to compete with one another and to compete with the Federal level. They took powers away from the people (see the Fourteenth amendment in which the States were explicitly told not to do that), and insult to injury they made local governments avoid the best voting system that Thomas Jefferson had already devised: proportional voting.
If the United States were to implement proportional voting where the US Constitution demands that (local levels) and where it makes a very strong case (State levels), then we would be a less selfish place, and the world would have a less selfish leader (probably still as strong plus loved more than it is today). Our economy would be working better for all (in the US and outside the US).
It is the system. You knew it, and you did not change it.
There is still time, because the US Constitution is still intact, just not executed correctly.
