A very nice, personal account.
I use a scientific model to point where the energy goes that you are talking about.
In the Big Whisper model (a Big Bang theory distinct from the Lambda-CDM model), there are three forms of energy:
Normal energy (68%)
Deformed energy (27%)
Matter (5%)
Matter is the most extreme form of energy, and it is damaged energy that cannot restore itself to its original shape.
The percentages are not my own, they are physicists calculating the amounts of matter, dark matter, and dark energy.
Yet these are also percentages quite ordinary in statistics.
68% represents all outcomes that one can declare as establishing the most common norm. 68% is one standard deviation in which we find the bulk of most outcomes.
95% is two standard deviations and that is a difference of 27% from the 68%.
Anything beyond the 95% is the more distinct, nothing-like-the-rest outcomes.
We are that 5%, we are Matter, but that means we are also energy.

To call out the norm as God is actually a bit of a stretch. It is only while standing in the 5% of energy that the remainder of energy appears like it has to be God.
And with Spinoza we can say, Yes it is God, but we don't have to. We can also just say, Yes there is more energy out there than just our own version of energy. We are just one form of energy.
We know that energy does not get lost, and this indicates that the other version of energy may not even ever die off. It would then simply be. Our 'damaged energy' version is then the one that runs out of fuel, so to speak, and the different parts of energy have to go their own ways again.
Still, your Mom may not be far off. She may still be here, but simply not in material format any longer.
