It is actually real simple, and you are pointing to it already, but not in an accurate way: You say that QM and GR are incompatible, but you are truly missing the point when you envision "two fish bowls as separate in a vast ocean."
At the QM reality, we see a charged subatomic outcome. The proton has a positive charge, the neutron is neutral, and the electron has a negative charge.
GR is the overall outcome and it is completely neutral in charge.
The subatomic charge is dealt with at the subatomic level, then multiplied to the universal level of matter.
It could not be simpler.
Then, you have to forget about spacetime, but you can indeed imagine an invisible reality of energy in our universe.
The proton is charged positively, and the electron is charged negatively, fully in balance throughout the universe. That can only mean that the proton is the material result, while the electron providing the neutralizing blanket had to come from somewhere else. I hope you can see it already.
The original state in as far as still intact is doing the delivering of the electrons.
We therefore have two /three differently based outcomes in our universe:
* The protons and the neutrons as their own outcomes, but they are of a secondary nature that derived from the original state.
* The electrons as the reactions to the positive charges of the protons, but of a tertiary nature from the original to neutralize the secondary outcome.
- The (large) remnant of the original state, not materialized. The primary nature of the universe. The electrons are coming straight from this primary nature of the universe, themselves becoming the tertiary outcome.
