Most physicists pick one and throw the other baby out with the bathwater
Not all physicists support the notion that unification must be possible. They see a question mark left standing.
Yet review nearly all storytelling by all physicists about our physical universe, and most storylines contain unification as if it were absolutely normal and expected.
When there are two babies in the bathwater, and a choice is made which to accept, then the other baby gets thrown out with the bathwater.

A good scientist does not make a choice first to start investigating the known data and observations to come to larger ideas and conclusions. The choice is postponed until the very end, when all options have been investigated thoroughly.
However, that is not what most physicists do. They make a choice first, and end up scratching their heads.
These physicists go headlong with their assumption, often not realizing that they passed a point already that required them to make a choice.
