It is a lie to say we only have poor choices, Jessica. If we follow the US Constitution to the letter, then we should have a four or five-party system in place, right now. I'll tell you within two minutes of reading what happened and I'll show you how easy it is to start reversing the point where we lost the promised Republic.
The fastest way of saying this is with the Founding Fathers writing it down with:
1/ Do as I say, 2/ not as I do.
Here we go:
1/ The Founding Fathers put voting restrictions in place for the Federal level only. That was very smart because a large nation will not last very long when there are 20 different political pulls on its center of power. Concentrating power is smart at the Federal level.
2/ They told that no other part of government can concentrate powers because that would deny or disparage rights retained by the People. Thomas Jefferson’s voting system was presented as the system to follow for the other levels.
What did the powers that came into being do?
They restricted voting for the States. They concentrated powers where it was not their right to concentrate powers. There was no good (geo)political reason other than not wanting to share with all.
They denied and disparaged rights retained by the People -- unconstitutionally.
Insult to injury, once in place, the States made it verboten for cities and counties to use Thomas Jefferson's voting system. With every turn possible, they blocked the use of Thomas Jefferson's voting system because that would have meant they needed to share their power with more people. They did not want that.
So, the Founding Fathers put Restrictions x 1 in place, and the powers that be made sure that Restrictions x 3 were put in place.
That is why you feel you are in jail, because you are further in jail than the Founding Fathers deemed necessary for the safety and stability of the Federation.
