Yes, we can achieve normalization of our political process by changing it -- no US Constitutional changes required -- which will normalize distribution of wealth to society as a whole and not just to the rich.
Let me first point out that our idea of what the USA is or should be got warped (positively) by the New Deal. Because of the Great Depression, a package was put in place that for forty years established that idea of our being a good nation for most.
But our political system was never a true democratic system; it was always set up for the political elite with their benefiting more from it.
No surprise therefore that after 40 years of enjoying the New Deal, we had another 40 years of breaking down the New Deal (in various ways) and right now we are back where we were in the early 1900s in as far as wealth distribution is concerned.
You are absolutely right that this is a plutocracy because we have a capitalist system (I am okay with that) that is guarded by the wolves (I am not okay with that).
We need political reform, and there are baby steps available because the Founding Fathers never envisioned a two-party system, and they were actually afraid that the mob could end up inside the political process. They put enough in place for us to nudge our way out from under the mob controlling Washington D.C.
But... they are baby steps. Here is the setup.
The Bill of Rights demands that government uses the better system and does not use a discriminating system -- unless granted exception.
The Federal level is granted exception, and so a direct change is not possible unless we follow the near-impossible path of changing the US Constitution.
The next level is the State level, and they were not given direct exception to needing to use the better system, but they were given many other powers and freedoms. Basically, they have a bunch of loopholes and therefore a path to get this rectified in court is arduous and even then likely not succeeding.
Yet governments have fallen over the price of bread, so fortunately the least important level of government -- cities and counties -- did not receive any exception to the rule. Cities and counties are not even mentioned in the US Constitution. So, they must put Proportional Voting in place, which is hands down the better voting system (particularly for the local level).
Once people vote in a Proportional system, the wool will come off their eyes because then they will see we are held prisoners in the winner-take-all version we have today. We have good cop/bad cop today, which means we are already in custody.
In Sweden, the Netherlands, and Spain, the wealthy are not as filthy as they are here. They have the capitalist game like we have as well, but they have much better guards in place.

Just to make sure this is understood:
In our voting system 30% of the voters lead the country.
In Proportional Voting 50% of the voters lead the country.
Our US Senators were voted in place with on average the support of 60% of the voters giving them their win.
That means that 30% of the voters got their Democratic Senators, 30% of the voters got their Republican Senators, and the largest group of voters, 40%, went home empty-handed.
It is exactly this empty-handedness that gives the elite their empowerment. Not 50% of the voters guid this nation, but just 30% guides it (be it left or be it right), and neither party needs to close that gap in our political system.
As such, we will always have a capitalist nation that squeezes until another Great Recession takes place until we change the political winner-take-all game.

Come join Local Revolutions to take baby steps toward implementing the better voting system. Once we have it in place at the local levels, we will want it for our State elections, too. At the State level, it is fairly easy to get the better voting system of full representation. It does not involve any complicated changing of the US Constitution.
Once we have proportional voting (or proportionally-enhanced voting) at the State level, we are already home free. We will then be sending three, four, or five different political colors to Washington, D.C. without our needing to change the US Constitution. Once we have different colors at the local and State levels, we will diversify our eggs into different baskets.
Come join Local Revolutions. It is easier than you think to get this done at the local level because it is the law. The Founding Fathers are with us.
