You still call this a democracy? What was the best system in the world in the late 18th century, completely worthy that word — democracy — is now a feeble nation. The word Republic does no longer fit this nation. And worst is that you are NOT writing about our backward system. We have nothing but a game in the voting booth. We don’t select our representatives; they are pre-picked already.
Yes, it matters if we don’t come out to vote because the one we hate may then indeed win. It’s been a long time since we picked representatives because they were the ones going to represent us best. The whole game has been pulled sideways like a tug-of-war with third party interests just stepping in mid-way of that rope and pulling the whole enchilada in their own direction.
Our system is sick, and we all know it. We’re staring at the top as if it is a television show. We think we can only switch channels or turn the box off, but we can actually walk in and change the set up.
Nothing less than the United States Constitution gives us the power to make the first steps. It’s just a first step, but once accomplished, a follow-up step is then within reach.
There are two things happening at the same time with our US Constitution involving our voting rights.
One, the Fed and State levels are given extensive powers, but the local governments are not, and yet they behave as if they got those powers, too.
Two, this matters with the 14th Amendment because it rules that governments must put the better system in place, if that is available. Governments are not allowed to discriminate in their functioning.
Cities and counties must follow this demand fully. They do not have any wiggle room to avoid this like Fed and States do with their given additional powers.
This means that the best possible democratic system must be put in place, today. There are more than 30,000 cities, townships and counties in the US, and if only a handful would switch because voters demand it, then those examples would open up our eyes so quickly.
I think to know for sure that ALL political scientists agree that proportional voting is that better system for the individual voter. I have plenty of evidence to make it clear otherwise.
Locally, we most often have just a single party taking up all council seats. Imagine that. The United States, a proud democracy and republic is a single-party nation across the board at the local levels. We were had.
